PestPatrol 5 Home User Edition distinguishes itself with the best pest descriptions in the business, so you can make truly informed decisions about how to handle the spyware you find on your machine. It's also among the best in terms of actually finding spyware. We found Pest Patrol to be a good product with some minor annoyances. It is priced slightly more expensively than our other higher ranked products, which hurts its overall rating. Update: We are happy to report that Pest Patrol is now selling for $29.95 which put it at the same price as the other top products. It can detect spyware running in memory, stop browser hijackings, examine your startup settings, remove tracking cookies, and eliminate registry changes made by intruding programs. We were unable to determine if it can remove spyware on the next reboot cycle (something that is often required with more stubborn spyware). Pest Patrol did not alert us when all known spyware was installing itself on our computer, but overall it has good spyware removal capabilities.
We discovered no problems on either Windows XP or Windows 2000, unlike the free products which caused serious browser slowdowns on Windows XP. Pest Patrol took about 20 minutes to do a full scan which was quite a bit slower than the higher rated products we tested. It's important to note that Pest Patrol performed a thorough scan on every file in our system and didn't take any shortcuts however. In total Pest Patrol found 75% of the spyware we loaded. One feature that we really liked about Pest Patrol is the built-in library that had the most thorough and informative descriptions of most of the spyware programs that we have ever encountered. In fact if you are really keen on getting to know your scumware then this is your product. Seriously look no further. Most of the other built-in options that Pest Patrol has (such as a list of running processes or startup files) seemed to be last-minute additions to the product. These options made the user interface more confusing than it needs to be and should be removed, or at least hidden. The product does not include a help file. Instead, the help sends you to their website which contains a “getting started” section as well as a tutorial. The tutorial was confusing – if you really need some hand holding to run this product, we feel you'll find it a frustrating and tedious experience wading through the online documentation. Pest Patrol is a good spyware blocker there is no doubt about it. Although it is priced higher than our other top rated tools and lacks a scheduler for off-hour scans it still should not be ignored. They are also a pioneer of the industry and are not going away anytime soon from what I can see. For more information visit Pest Patrol's Homepage. |
